19th Century Italian Renaissance Walnut Courtship Chair

Sculpted from solid Italian Walnut, this exquisite 19th Century Italian Renaissance Courtship Chair allowed a young man and young woman to sit next to each other to conduct discreet conversation without actually being next to one another!  Designed to be placed towards the center of the room (so the adults could keep a watchful eye...), it has been hand carved from all directions with angels, gryffins, foliates, rosettes and floral motifs, all in full relief.  Tapered & fluted columns with acanthus plumes provide support for the armrests and seats.
