Pair 19th Century Italian Walnut Renaissance Revival Dagobert Armchairs are derived from a design that dates back millennia to ancient Egypt!  The criss-cross placement of the framing creates a cradling effect, yet the legs curve out for extra stability.  Here we see fine craftsmanship from Italian artisans, with meticulous attention paid to construction, and even more effort expended in adornment, with a variety of Renaissance themes expressed in full relief and bas relief across the canvas of each chair's framwork.  Florentine fleurs de lys appear on the arched crown flanked by urn finials set atop lions' heads on each cornerpost.  Another lion's head peeks out in relief on the seatback, flanked by beautiful foliate work.  The framework is fully carved and curves gracefully down to the armrest tips, carved with acanthus plumes like the supports below them which then lead the eyes to yet another lion's visage, with more carved detail on the framework and stretchers below.  A remarkable feat of sculpture, this pair will make an excellent addition to any masculine decor, and can be made even more comfortable with the addition of small square cushions upholstered in coordinating fabric, of course!
