This Pair of 19th Century Swedish Neoclassical Gilt-Wood Armchairs boasts intriguing fluted backsplats and hand-carved egg & dart trim encircling the entire frame. This type of fauteuil, or open armchair, features caned seats upon which it is
customary to place a cushion if so desired.  The lightweight and suppleness of the cane are very comfortable without augmentation, and the airiness of the design is great for warmer climates.  Stately classical architecture is enhanced by the carved embellishment featuring its original patinaed gilded finish.  The embellishment includes egg & dart trim all around the seatback and down the arms, which are met with upturned acanthus leaves.  The slotted splat features a similar motif in a stylized bell flower appearing in the slots themselves just below chamfered holes in a Greek coin pattern.  The same egg & dart trim surrounds the apron accented by rosettes on the corner plinths, from which the tapered & fluted legs are mounted.
Circa 1890s.
