Pair Antique French Louis XVI Painted Bergeres ~ Wingback Armchairs literally envelope you in comfort!  The design harks back to a time when drafty rooms necessitated the design of a chair to wrap around the body, and of course the French took the design to its artistic limits!  This pair features classic wingback style side panels that scroll into the padded armrests which are tipped with acanthus leaf motif, then scroll down towards the framework below where another upturned acanthus leaf appears.  Rosettes on the blocks provide juncture points from which the turned, tapered and fluted legs are affixed.  The framework is also embellished with a spiral ribbon motif for added visual appeal, and the design includes upholstery all around making them a splendid choice for placement in the center of the room.  Upholstery is in good condition, being a high quality mohair in a rich burgundy tone.  The painted finish has weathered and aged, yet still accentuates the carved embellishment and has attained a lovely patina over the course of the passing decades.
Circa early 1900s
