19th Century French Louis XVI Bronze Inkwell with Dogs is an amazing example of the metalsmith's art!  Phenomenal detail abounds from the pierced floral, foliate and urn motif on the back which meets with the dogs on both right and left sides.  The floral urn motif is repeated on the frontispiece of the work, with an elaborate foliate border all around accented with ribbon and laurel sprays.  The porcelain inkwell reservoirs are held in pediments with hinged lids, each decorated on all sides, for a truly opulent effect.  The saber letter opener has remained with the set as well, for a nice masculine touch.  Such inkwells were the pride of the owners, who used such works as statements of wealth and affluence.
