The artistry of 18th century French cabinetmaking is on magnificent display in this Régence period carved oak bookcase. A broad, deeply molded crown rises above successive bands of egg and dart, shells, and foliage, with carving continuing down the pilasters and across the lower doors. The eighteen panes of hand-rolled glass have the gentle variations characteristic of their making, lending warmth and depth to the books displayed behind them.
Below, arched moldings frame intricately carved floral panels, while brass escutcheons provide a delicate finishing detail. Two interior drawers add to the useful storage behind the lower doors.
The Régence period bridged the formality of Louis XIV and the freer, more expressive design of Louis XV. That change can be seen throughout this antique bookcase: its commanding architectural form is enlivened by the movement of the carved shells, flowers, and foliage. The ornament was conceived as part of the furniture itself, flowing from the crown through the doors and uniting its upper and lower sections.
Its oak has acquired a rich depth of color over the centuries, bringing definition to the carving and preserving the work of a highly accomplished cabinetmaker. Both a place for a treasured collection and an extraordinary example of French furniture making, this bibliothèque carries the presence and craftsmanship of its era.
