19th Century Italian Half-Glazed Earthenware Pot was left unglazed on the lower half to be buried in the earth in the basement to keep the contents cool in the days prior to refrigeration.  Such foodstuffs could be stored months instead of days in this manner.  Generously sized handles and a pouring spout are a testament to the talents of the potter who threw this keepsake!
