19th Century French Renaissance Secretary ~ Bookcase in Stripped Oak is a masterpiece of the furniture crafter's art!  Rendered during the revival of the centuries-old style, it features a boldly carved crown presiding over the bonnet which is centered with a full relief lion's head flanked by grapevines and foliates.  On each corner framing the bonnet appear finely carved rosettes which are duplicated at the top of the lower base unit below.  The rosettes both upper and lower appear above the cornerposts which are barley twist columns set in a niche.  Above the columns flank the glazed doors with arches and elaborate carved molding.  Through the hand-rolled glass one can see the original adjustable shelving, perfect for books, keepsakes and objets d'art.  The lower tier appears to be a grandiose commode, but in fact the uppermost drawer is a fold down facade that opens to reveal a complete desk assemblage, complete with cubby holes and stationery drawers inside!  Three spacious drawers below that provide copious storage, with all four drawers lavished with heraldic crests flanked by undulating grapevines in exquisite relief.  The bold base below is finely carved to match the motifs above, and rests on bun feet.
