19th Century French Louis XVI Gold and Silver Neoclassical Mirror is a wonderfully detailed masterpiece with both gold and silver embellishment, making it a very unusual treasure indeed!  The eye is first drawn to the magnificent centerpiece depicting a Grecian urn bursting with a floral display, and set upon gorgeous acanthus leaf flourishes tied together by flowing ribbon.  This crowning achievement of the sculptor's art appears above the architrave that spans the entire width which depicts a repeating shell motif separated by pyramids and embellished with foliate flourishes to complement the centerpiece above.  More foliates flank the architrave on each side for symmetry, and the entire assemblage is positioned above the generously sized original beveled mirror, which is framed with fine beading, molding, and a foliate inspired egg & dart.  The contrast between the gold and silver finishes is truly appealing, and reminds one of the ancient alloy between the two metals called "electrum".
A new backing has been installed to protect the wonderfully preserved silvering of the mirror.
