Antique 19th Century French Framed Hand Painted Oil Painting on Canvas - Barbizon School
Sheep Amid Rolling Hills Landscape Painting
Named after the village of Barbizon in France, the Barbizon school of painters were part of a movement toward realism in the mid 19th century. Previously, the academic and romantic styles reigned supreme, with their idealized portrayals of historical figures and sublime wilderness. Barbizon painters reacted against these artificial representations in an attempt to capture the everyday lives of ordinary people.
Remarkably executed with an astonishing sense of realism, this incredible original oil on canvas depicts a shepherd with his flock before a vast expanse of land, precisely the type of commonplace subject matter associated with the Barbizon school. It is quite a challenge to communicate the attention to detail expressed in this highly sophisticated work, from the minute blades of grass, to the organically shaped branches, anatomically accurate animals and nuanced gradation of tone. The result is a museum-quality work that attests to the expertise of an educated and experienced author.
Survived with its original, beautifully detailed gesso and wood frame.
Circa 1850s.
