Antique Framed Oil Painting on Board by Paul Schouten (1860-1922) is a classic work by the storied Flemish artist who glorified the rural lifestyle ~ especially in his depictions of farm animals, scenery, and the occasional rural inhabitants. This work features his remarkable trademark naturalistic details in the features of the two cows.  Note his special treatment of their eyes, with almost human expressions of contentment.

Paul Schouten, also referred to as Paul Henry Schouten (Paris, 1860 - Watermael-Boitsfort, 1922) was a Belgian landscape painter and half-brother of the animal painter Henry Schouten.  He had a preference for animals and realistic landscapes. Sometimes he painted together with his half-brother Henry a painter animals, as Paul frequently painted the characters and the background.  Discovered on our buying trip in Europe, we love the charming composition, original frame, rich colors and detailed brushstrokes of this unique find.

Circa 1890's.
