Antique Framed Oil Painting on Board by Xavier Sager (1881-1969) depicts Sisteron, considered the "Gateway to Provence", and is a quaint community east of Avignon, revered for its awesome scenery and picturesque rivers.  Xavier Sager enjoyed a long life and was known for a signature style blending realism with impressionism with warm earth tones creating a special effect.  This wonderful landscape, painted in 1907, creates that entrance effect with the natural rock banks working with the man-made wall structures and almost fortified-looking dwellings leaving one to wonder what lies beyond the archway.  Survives in its original frame.
