Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Henry Joseph Pauwels (1903-1983) is a spectacular example of the artist's pastoral works, and unusual in that it contains no farm animals or rustic cottages in the composition, aspects that were frequently used by the artist for interest.  In this case he was obviously inspired by the naturalistic vista and the sparse trees exposed to the vagaries of nature.  The water feature at the center foreground serves as a pathway to lead the viewer into the scene.  Intricate depiction of clouds is also a trademark of this gifted painter.
Henry Joseph Pauwels was born December 16, 1903 in Sleydinge, Belgium. Like most artists of his generation, Pauwels received academic training in Paris and absorbed the theories and techniques of the French Impressionists.  His vibrant pastel color palette and loose brushwork reflect the Impressionists' interest in the study of light and color and was likely painted "en plein aire" or outdoors on location. He was a successful artist of the pre and post WWII era.  He exhibited widely in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. His paintings are represented at Le Musee de Gand, Belgium.
Circa mid-1900s
