Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Jean-Baptiste Scoriel (1883-1956) was created just four years before the artist's passing, and represents a lifetime of accumulated talent and experience expressed in a soft palette washed in grays depicting a quaint village scene with a medieval looking church in the background.  The road invites the viewer into the scene, to join the local townspeople strolling through the scene.  Water features prominently in the foreground as well, with the gray sky boldly brushed above providing a gray cast over the entire composition, enhanced by the shadowy structure at the right.  A fine work of post-impressionistic interpretation, it survives in its original matted frame.
Jean-Baptiste Scoriel was born in Belgium in 1883, and became a noted landscaper, practicing mainly oil painting. Over time, his palette is refined and brightened, then transitioning to more neutral effects like this example. Jean-Baptiste Scoriel was an emeritus professor of great value who trained a large number of future artists.
