Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Leo Van Der Smissen (1900-1966) is a quaint view of the courtyard next to a beguinage, which was the housing set aside for ladies studying to enter a monastic lifestyle, and were affiliated with a convent in each locale.  The humbleness of the dwellings only adds to their charm and mystique.  Here a well-established convent is apparent due to the almost park-like spaces depicted, with nuns in full habits seen walking along the pathway.  Van Der Smissin pays homage to the devoted in this splendid work, that survives in its original frame.  Van Der Smissen was a famed artist in his native Belgium, and studied at the Academy of Bruges from 1913-1919.  This work was completed in the latter years of his career.
