Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas of Brugge, Signed by the artist, is a splendid composition that captures the mystique of that storied city.  Once the principal Flemish port prior to the ascendancy of Antwerpen to the north, it is literally criss-crossed with canals used to control water as well as provide a convenient means of transportation within and outside of the city.  It is known in some parts as the "Venice of the North" for that reason.  Here the artist has captured a quaint, peaceful scene with the morning sun bringing colors forth in the lush green surroundings and the fancifully painted homes along the canal.  Two nuns are seen crossing the masonry bridge, a common sight in such towns even today.  The artist has shown a command of perspective and proportion, as well as visual intrigue, with the shadowy gray hints of towers and spires in the background against the overcast early morning sky, as well as the rippled reflections in the water.
Circa early to mid-1900s
