Antique Water Color on Board by H. G. Ontrop (1880-1955) shows the versatility of the artist in his creation of a microcosm of the quaint French village of Dijon.  The region is famous for many things and its beautiful countryside is the perfect accompaniment to its many charming hamlets.  In this scene Ontrop has captured the rich earth colors of the terra cotta roof, the vibrant sun-bleached colors popular in the provinces of France, plus a little character with the window box of flowers, a shutter that needs remounting, and a sign of a dog perhaps indicating a veterinarian's office.  The site was also chosen for its passageway under the dwelling above that entices one to explore the courtyard just a few meters on the other side...
