19th Century Oil Painting on Board by Maes is a splendid pastoral work demonstrating the artist's abilities in landscape and animal renderings in one work. Painting on board is more unforgiving than canvas, and creates a challenge to the artist. Here we see three views of the subject from different angles, as they would appear in life, yet even more of a challenge to produce with the brush. This was one study of a large grouping by the artist, as identified in calligraphy on the back side. Gentle earth tones make it a great choice for a pensive atmosphere.
