19th Century Country French Whitewashed Armoire from Normandie is a marvel of rural craftsmanship where talented artisans labored with what we consider primitive tools today to create works of the cabinetmaker's art!  This example with its classically-inspired architecture, features a bold crown molding appearing above the bonnet which has been centered with a full relief basket of flowers with a pair of lovebirds kissing, flanked by fully laden grapevines.  Such motifs were common in armoires meant as dowries or wedding gifts.  The practice was so common the French called them armoires du marriage.  Below the beautifully carved bonnet appears the mirror image doors, each with exquisitely scrolled frameworks and their own relief floral baskets at the top.  Towards the center are slanted oval raised carvings with the same recurrent theme of baskets of flowers, with the symbolism representing a blossoming love.  Amazing detail also appears all over the facade in the form of molding details.  The boldly scrolled apron with carved detail finishes out the visual masterpiece.  The doors open to reveal a yawning interior ready to customize to your needs, and fitted with the original hand-forged bolt latch.
