Early 19th Century Country French Armoire from Normandie is a magnificent example of traditional hand-crafted excellence using techniques handed down from generation to generation for centuries! The trademark chapeau de gendarme crown overlooks the bonnet which has been centered with a lovely basket full of flowers carved in relief directly into the wood. Below the crown also appear the full-height doors featuring a lovely French scroll shape and three distinct panels, with the center panel raised up and carved with baskets of flowers slightly tilted towards each other which was a common affectation of the artisans of the region. The doors are each hung with three outboard-mounted brass hinges allowing the doors to swing wide open. Beautifully crafted brass key guards provide even more visual appeal. A subdued scroll design on the apron below is centered with a lovely rosette which is flanked by the double-scrolled motifs on the legs tipped with cloven hoof feet. Note the hand-hewn planks of the back and the pegged mortise & tenon joinery which are hallmarks of the period and the region, amply contributing to the legendary reverence with which such historical keepsakes were so lovingly crafted!
