19th Century French Directoire Neoclassical Mahogany Marble Top Commode is a superlative example of the genre!  The style was born in the early years of the 19th century when Europe was in a particularly tumultuous state.  The Directoire which was placed in charge of France's affairs inspired a more tailored, austere look with architectural roots drawn from ancient Greece and Rome.  Although the Directoire had but a brief life, the style lives on and remains popular to this day.  This example was rendered from exotic imported mahogany, then trimmed in brass and fitted with brass ring pulls and key guards, and finally topped with elegant beveled Carrara marble.  The marble follows the contours of the rounded and fluted cornerposts which are tipped in brass and finished with a tapered form.  Brass trim molding surrounds each drawer facade and even the two panels on each side, accenting but not detracting from the incredible natural beauty of the expensive imported furniture wood.  An excellent choice to blend with just about any formal decor!
