19th Century French Louis XIV Commode en Arbalette represents the epitome of Old World craftsmanship and style!  Hand-carved from thick, solid planks of old growth oak, it features a facade that when viewed from above resembles the shape of an archer's bow, hence the reference to an arbalette.  The top follows the contours of the casework below and is defined by multiple tiers of complex molding that is most amazing on the rounded corners which provide the framework for the four spacious drawers.  The drawers are subtly adorned with shell, floral and foliates carved into the wood, and feature bale pulls and centered key guards cast from solid bronze.  The aforementioned rounded cornerposts are also carved with complementary motifs, and lead the eyes down to the base molding which mirrors the complex molding tiers at the top, finishing with large bun feet.  Note the pegged mortise & tenon joinery which is a hallmark of fine, hand-crafted antique furniture!
Circa 1870s.
