Antique French Louis XV Chinoiserie Bombe Marble Top Commode represents the culmination of four disciplines in the art of furniture craft!  First the cabinetmaker produced the complex bombe shape, which eliminates straight lines yet is symmetrical in overall form.  No matter what the viewing angle, above, from the side or straight on, only the top surface is a straight line!  Second, the artist skillfully painted the entire surface with a lovely aged brick red background and a variety of gold tones to create a Japonaise formal garden scene complete with water, birds, flowers and human interest.  The scenery was also painted on each of the serpentine sides.  Third, the metal smith cast bronze mounts to adorn the shoulders, feet and apron, as well as key guards and drawer pulls.  Lastly, the stone mason hand-contoured and beveled a luxurious piece of marble to follow the complex shape of the casework below and provide an elegant yet carefree surface.
