19th Century French Gothic Firescreen features a beautifully sculpted frame carved from old-growth quarter sawn oak with six legs adorned with foliates for support.  The fabric on one side has a needlepoint inscription translating roughly to Thanks to God for Keeping the Home Fire Lit.  Such firescreens were not meant to catch sparks, obviously, but were heat shields placed several feet from the fireplace to protect the delicate faces of seated ladies who were protecting their makeup and hair, which was heat-sensitive in those days!

Circa 1840s
