Antique Dutch Gothic Firescreen features a beautifully sculpted frame carved from old-growth quarter-sawn oak with six legs adorned with foliates for support.  The fabric on one side has a needlepoint inscription translating roughly to Thanks to God for Keeping the Home Fires Lit.  Such firescreens were not meant to catch sparks, obviously, but were heat shields placed several feet from the fireplace to protect the delicate faces of seated ladies who were protecting their hair and makeup, which was heat-sensitive in those days!  Note the carved image of an hourglass at the top flanked by trefoils.
