Antique of the Week ~ Louis XVI Painted Commode

If you are in love with the Louis XVI neo-classical style, you will love this antique French commode that we’ve just uploaded to our web store.  This exquisite chest of drawers was created during the reign of the maven of the rebirth of the classical style~ Marie Antoinette.  Rural artisans of 18th century France tended to follow the style lead by the reigning monarch and as a consequence, the styles generated out of Paris and the chateaux of the aristocracy.  This example~ crafted from hand-selected old-growth white oak~ features detailed carvings from an obviously talented and skilled wood sculptor, with floral and foliate motifs delicately carved into the actual drawer facade~ not applied.  A lovely neutral painted finish with a subtle patina gives it a light and airy effect.  Elegant solid brass pulls and key guards complete the timeless neo-classical look.  Circa 1770s.
