Antique of the Week ~ Normandy Bonnetieres

antique letter engravingThe timeless beauty of antique furniture is truly inspiring and is a guiding element in many homes’ interior decor.  This exceptional pair of antique 19th century French Bonnetiers is no exception. Hailing from the storied shores of Normandy and exuding the unmistakable charm of Country French style.  These antique French petite armoires were originally designed to store hats and bonnets.  At the time of their creation, the hat was a crucial part of daily attire, but leave it to the French to create something so charming to house a daily necessity.  It is a rarity for this amazing pair to survive together, as pairs so often get separated. It is a privilege to acquire and live with such treasures of Country French romantic history.

Antique of the Week ~ Louis XVI Painted Commode

Antique Letter EngravingIf you are in love with the Louis XVI neo-classical style, you will love this antique French commode that we’ve just uploaded to our web store.  This exquisite chest of drawers was created during the reign of the maven of the rebirth of the classical style~ Marie Antoinette.  Rural artisans of 18th century France tended to follow the style lead by the reigning monarch and as a consequence, the styles generated out of Paris and the chateaux of the aristocracy.  This example~ crafted from hand-selected old-growth white oak~ features detailed carvings from an obviously talented and skilled wood sculptor, with floral and foliate motifs delicately carved into the actual drawer facade~ not applied.  A lovely neutral painted finish with a subtle patina gives it a light and airy effect.  Elegant solid brass pulls and key guards complete the timeless neo-classical look.  Circa 1770s.

Antique of the Week ~ The Hunt Buffet

Antique letter engravingThe warm patina and intricate carvings are captivating elements of this antique French Hunt buffet. Such sideboards were very popular in the second part of the 19th century and over a hundred years later, demand is strong with many designers desiring to bring focus to this wonderful style, and at the same time giving a room a rustic yet refined soul with a certain identity.

This particular antique hunt buffet boasts three bold acanthus rosettes on the drawer tier, which appear above carved corbels and bounty-of-the-earth fruit motifs, called della Robbia by the Italians, and lead the eye to the door panels gloriously carved with the spoils of the hunt. The drawers have been carved with intertwined vines which create the drawer pulls and continue around the sides. Even the side panels are framed, raised, and carved with intaglio foliates, with a full relief carving on the upper side panel boasting a heraldic crest and foliates. Intricate molding throughout provides the proper framework, especially the demilune around the top edge.
