Antique of the Week ~ Louis XVI Console

Antique Letter EngravingPerhaps no other style is as universally elegant as the antique French Louis XVI style, and this console is no exception!  I always considered this one of my favorite styles, and it cannot be denied that its basis in classicism is both alluring and romantic.  What’s not to love about florid Corinthian capitals, classic urns bursting with flower bouquets, cascading garlands and stately tapered columns?

Antique Louis XVI Console

Of course the style was originated during the second part of the 18th century by the court of French King Louis XVI and his Queen of unquestioned elegance, Marie Antoinette.  Highly influenced by amazing architectural finds of the century in both Greece and Italy, the style encompassed the best of ancient Roman and Greek architecture and design.  All past significant antique French styles enjoyed a renewed popularity a century later during the Napoleon III and Beaux Artes period.  In fact, Napoleon III’s wife, Eugenie, was especially enamored with the Louis XVI style, which is evident when examining pieces from the era.  During the same period Italy followed suit, producing the so-called Neoclassical style which enjoyed its own resurgence, and artisans there produced exceptional works of the cabinetmaker’s art that rivaled those of the Parisian masters.

Antique Louis XVI Console Details

Epitomizing the early Beaux Artes aesthetic, this exquisite antique Italian console is completely hand-carved from solid walnut, and has survived with its original gesso & painted finish. Although the artistic execution occurred in Italy, it exudes the essence of the Louis XVI style. Classic motifs abound, beginning with the lovely rinceau apron which consists of solid blocks of walnut carved with splendid bas relief. Below the apron are magnificent garlands carved from single blocks with exceptionally detailed full relief, centered by the classic torchere & fascis motif. Italian artisans are legendary in their abilities to sculpt wood and stone, and this console was produced on a grand scale to perfectly illustrate that noted fact. Also original to the piece, the beautifully veined, Italian marble top completes the look. Inspired by the academic classical architectural style, this piece embodies such an approach to a regenerated spirit within the grand traditions of Greco-Roman designs. Italy, Circa 1880s. Measures 37 x 67 x 20.5.

The console as a piece of furniture actually began, in concept, as an architectural extension of the paneling and window sills, eventually evolving into a distinct piece of furniture that could be placed anywhere, but primarily in hallways and entryways.  The main purpose of a console is to impress ~ to supply an elegant place to display objets d’art, and over which paintings and mirrors can be placed to create an entrance that will not soon be forgotten.  This antique Italian console has all those attributes in abundance, and echoes the magnificence of the Louis XVI style to perfection!

Tablescapes 2011~ An Evening of Candlelight, Antiques & Style!

I-1It has been amazing to be involved for the past seven years with Kappa Kappa Gamma’s now-famous Tablescapes charity event that has been a Dallas tradition since 1995. Each year we select an exciting antique theme to represent our table setting. As many as 40 other designers, florists and notable retailers such as Nieman Marcus, Horchow, and others participate as well.Antique Polychrome Saint Peter
In years past our table settings have revolved around themes such as~ Country French, Italian Renaissance, Noelle Francaise, Black Forest, French Gothic and more. This year we decided to do a mix of Italian and French ~ the Arte Povera style.
The Arte Povera style emerged as a movement popular in Italy during the 60’s. It has recently experienced a renaissance throughout Europe, enjoying a new popularity that has spilled over the Atlantic into homes of American cognoscenti. The style is somewhat similar to the British and American “shabby chic” style, but more oriented towards classic and rustic antiques. Finishes are typically painted, stripped or distressed by age.
Arte Povera Buffet One
For our Tablescapes display this year we combined etched and mercury glass with linen runners and napkins for a supple, natural texture. The centerpiece of the display was an antique 18th century polychrome statue of Saint Paul we found in Italy.  A pair of grand cast iron Napoleon III period jardinieres held lush arrangements of hydrangeas, kale, natural greenery and lilies of the Nile.
Arte Povera Buffet TwoThe Dallas Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma organizes this unique event each October. The Tablescapes event consists of both a festive evening gala and the following day, an elegant luncheon for a fun-filled and visually inspiring two-day event.
Local designers, retail & antique stores (like Inessa Stewart’s Antiques & Interiors), and florists create incredibly unique tables for displaying their interpretations of the latest trends. It’s easy to pick up interesting entertainment tips, and always a pleasure to enjoy the presentations from exciting featured speakers such as eminent designer Charles Faudree.

This year’s venue was the Brook Hollow Golf Club and the featured speaker, Bettie Bearden Pardee, who graciously autographed copies of her latest book, “Elegance on the Atlantic: Newport, Rhode Island”. Her unique perspective as one of its most gracious hostesses enables her to describe Newport’s high style and exceptional entertaining throughout its long and storied history. Surrounded by breathtaking ocean views, Newport is renowned for its colonial heritage, the Vanderbilts and Gilded Age decadence, the romance of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, the spirited tales of heiress Doris Duke, and its polished yacht fleets. She produced the “Entertaining With Style” feature as a contributing editor to Bon Appetit for 11 years. Well-versed in television work, Bettie was the creative producer and host of the series “Presidential Palate: Entertaining at the White House” on PBS and additionally, she has produced and appeared on many morning television programs including Good Morning America.
