Saint Paul
Survived with its original, beautifully patinated polychrome finish, this remarkable statue represents Saint Paul. Exceptionally, both the figure itself and the plinth on which it rests are hand-carved from a single block of wood, proving the work of an astute craftsman. Personalized facial features are extremely poignant, while fastidiously detailed tresses, precise proportions, and intricate drapery folds demonstrate a high level of sophistication. Delightful putti masks and relic vessel adorn the plinth faade, with Masonic emblems adorning the sides. Included in the incised carvings are the compass and set square, which represent judgement and discernment.
