Create a centerpiece that will impress your guests.  The captivating focal point of your table is a very important element.  Many centerpieces I design this time of the year are inspired by the vibrant fall colors of nature ~ some are intricate and complex; others are compositions that are simple, yet impressive. The abundant color palette of amber mixed with the antique patina and time worn elements of earthenware confit pots, dough bowls and copper pieces, can enhance the rustic appeal of such settings.

Antique Letter EngravingFor antique collectors, any change in season is the perfect excuse to use antique furniture and accessory finds to make a splashy tableau around a home, showing off their treasured collection. As we gather next week for Thanksgiving, we look for inspiration when creating table settings that express our own personal taste and the love we have for those with whom we share this special day. These creations are etched into our memories, gleaned from our personal collections and family mementos. Whether inspired by the rustic or more formal decor, antiques are an excellent starting point for our holiday table display.

Make a perfect mix of rustic and refined by bringing in the element of nature with delicate wreaths on blue transferware plates topped with small pie pumpkins to heighten the autumnal appeal.

Autumn’s Embrace by Inessa Stewart
As summer gives its way to fall,
It ushers cooler breath of winter.
We take joy in seasonal rebirth
With every shimmer of a leaf and in ever timber’s splinter.

The birch trees now dressed in amber
Scatter relics of summer’s luster
As we embrace these golden days, delighting in
The palette of every fruit and berry cluster.

Celebrating the bounty of autumn crescendos
Around the family table dressed with scarlet and gold,
We pleased to share the joys of the season
With feasts of harvest embracing us into ancestral fold.

Antique Inspirations ~ French Cachepots

November 21, 2012 Leave a Comment Written by Inessa Stewart

Antique Letter EngravingWith Thanksgiving Day approaching this time of year, we all are busy decorating our home for the holidays! As always, I pull out antique accessories, since they add so much charm to my holiday decorating.   Great additions to these antique-inspired settings are my antique French cachepots ~ a round jardinière ~ ornamental holders for a simple flower pot.  It is so easy to just drop in seasonal colorful plants such as mums and poinsettias in these decorative containers. Potted flowering plants last so much longer than cut flowers, so you can enjoy the beauty they bring for weeks, instead of just days!

Cachepots came into vogue during the late 17th and 18th centuries, when ornamental gardening was all the rage amongst the royalty and upper classes.  Cachepots are almost always round, serving as a decorative cover to the basic flower pot.  During the 19th century, cachepots were produced in a multitude of media and styles catering to the growing popularity of indoor gardening.  They were mostly used on tabletops and were made from brass, bronze, Barbotine, faience and porcelain.  I think antique French cachepots add a wonderful touch to our holiday décor, with effortless ease…

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.

It turns what we have into enough, and more.

It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order,

                        confusion to clarity.

It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home,

                        a stranger into a friend.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today~

And creates a vision for tomorrow.”

~ Melody Beattie
