An antique French Louis XVI desk by Hirler of Alsace, crafted in mahogany, displays the refinement of line and delicacy of ornament that define the neoclassical style. A deep, warm finish glows across the molded top with its softly rounded corners, and a frieze of Greek wave carving runs the length of the center drawer.
Each cabinet door frames a carved urn hung with ribboned swags, and carved foliate brackets grace the opening of the kneehole. Fluted columns with rosette corner blocks rise above four tapered and fluted legs, and cast brass escutcheons add a touch of gilt against the rich wood. The center drawer works together with two cabinets, one fitted with a pull out writing surface and the other with two interior drawers, for generous storage.
The Hirler maker's label is still present. Hirler worked in Mulhouse, carrying forward the French tradition of reviving and reinterpreting historic styles that celebrated the refined legacy of French furniture making.
Finished on all four sides, it can float in the center of a study, library, or home office, where its carving can be admired from every angle. Paired with leather bound books and gilt framed art, it creates an elegant workspace with timeless European character.
The original matching Louis XVI armchair by Hirler, upholstered in green leather and carved with the same Greek wave motif, is also available. See Related Products below left.
