Handmade needlepoint gives this antique bench the appearance of a miniature historic tapestry, with flowers, fruit, birds, a rabbit, a monkey and other small animals worked across a deep blue ground. The detailed composition was inspired by the celebrated millefleurs tapestries preserved at the Cluny Museum in Paris, particularly The Lady and the Unicorn, where animals and birds appear among abundant flowering foliage.
Dated 1935, the bench represents a fine Renaissance Revival interpretation of that centuries old tapestry tradition. The needlepoint is finished with decorative nailheads and supported by a carved wooden frame with turned legs and a stretcher base. Initials are worked into one corner, with the date appearing at the opposite end.
The needlepoint remains in good condition, with a small area of wear at one corner. This is the smaller of two coordinating benches, both made by J.R.Hoogezand of Utrecht. The larger bench with a related floral needlepoint design is available separately. Together they make a particularly appealing pair, yet each stands beautifully on its own. Sold separately.
