19th Century French Brass Double Inkwell with Cherub Motif in the Rococo revival style, dating to the 19th century.  A central winged cherub presides over two inkwell reservoirs, each retaining original hinged lids.  A scallop shell anchors the base, framed by acanthus scrolls.  The brass has developed a warm patina consistent with age and honest use.
Before the advent of the fountain pen and later the ballpoint, the inkwell was an essential fixture of every writing desk, from the grandest Parisian bureau to the modest country escritoire.  Correspondence, contracts, literature and ledgers all depended on the daily ritual of dipping quill or steel nib into ink, and the inkwell was crafted with care and artistry befitting its importance in daily life.
