A Belgian oil on canvas by Victor Fermans, painted at the quiet turn from winter to spring, when the last snow still lingers in the fields. The mood is calm and open. A muddy country path runs past a wooden fence toward a cluster of farmhouses and a distant church spire, and a river beyond catches the pale light.
Fermans paints with loose, assured brushwork and a soft palette. Fresh greens and patches of melting snow sit against warm ochre walls and a sky of rose and blue. Tall bare trees on the right give the composition its height and rhythm. Belgian landscape painters of the period, working in the spirit of Luminism, devoted themselves to the light of the Flemish countryside, and the same affection for a familiar village runs through the canvas.
A companion autumn village scene by the same artist is also available as of this writing. Hung alone or as a pair, the landscape brings quiet, natural color to a library, study, hallway or country kitchen.  See Related Products below left.
