A framed early 20th century Belgian oil on canvas by Victor Fermans, titled Village View, full of the quiet warmth of an autumn afternoon. The mood is calm and unhurried. Late sun falls across a low garden wall, golden trees glow against a pale rose sky, and a small brick chapel with a slender spire rises at the bend of an empty village lane.
Fermans paints with loose, confident brushwork and a light, sure touch, in the spirit of Belgian Luminism. Emile Claus led that movement at the turn of the century, bringing the light of Impressionism to the Flemish countryside. Amber and ochre leaves meet soft blue shadows. A stepped gable house in the distance and a wrought iron lantern on a whitewashed wall place the scene firmly in the Low Countries. The painting has the ease of a place the artist knew well and painted with affection.
A simple dark wood frame with a gilded inner edge sets off the canvas. The painting brings seasonal color and a sense of calm to a library, study, entry hall or breakfast room, and sits naturally alongside French and Belgian country furniture.
Another complementary work by the same artist is still available as of this writing.  See Related Products below left.
