An 18th century Country French Louis XV confiturier in stripped oak, revealing the pale, sun washed beauty of the wood with its rich grain and the gentle marks of centuries of use. A single drawer with a scroll cornered molded panel sits above a door with a shaped arched panel, each fitted with a hand forged iron escutcheon, and the door hangs on hand forged iron hinges. Canted front corners with small carved scrolled panels soften the silhouette, while a molded top and plinth base give it a sturdy, architectural presence.
Confituriers were made for the farmhouses and country homes of provincial France to hold the season's preserves, jams and fruits, kept cool and locked away behind a stout oak door. Village joiners built them with pegged mortise and tenon joinery and thick hand planed boards, the same methods used for the great armoires and buffets of the countryside, and the Louis XV style reached these rural workshops through bold curves and simple carved accents.
Stripped to its natural oak, the confiturier settles easily into today's interiors. Use it as a bar cabinet in the dining room, a bedside chest, an entry cabinet crowned with a lamp and a stack of books, or beside a sofa in a relaxed farmhouse or contemporary setting.
