18th Century Country French Whitewashed Buffet ~ Cabinet was designed to serve a typically large family, and provide adequate storage for all china, flatware and glassware while simultaneously presenting a visual style flair to the room.  Constructed from indigenous old-growth oak, it has been professionally whitewashed by our expert in house staff, and has a soft appearance that blends well with more casual decors.  The boldly molded top surrounds a nicely sized surface great for display, keepsakes or even a big flat panel TV.  Underneath, two regular sized drawers flank a cutlery drawer at the center, fitted with a lock to keep sharp knives out of the hands of the little ones.  Cast brass key guards are centered on each drawer, as well as fitted to the cabinet doors below, which complement the grass barrel hinges.  Carved details were inspired by the Louis XIV court, with sophisticated renderings of scrollwork, foliates and cross-hatching resembling netting.  Even the center stile has been adorned with this refined hand-carved bas relief, as have the rounded cornerposts.  The cabinet doors exhibit the largest display of the complementary motifs, emphasizing a shell at the top surrounded with the scrolls and foliates to create a crest form above, and an architectural flourish below, all set in a raised & recessed panel with arched spire-shaped framework.  Doors and drawers open wide to reveal capacious storage.  The side panels are tailored, chamfered panels, and the base molding is substantial, but designed to not detract from the carved embellishments above.  Note the abundant use of pegged mortise & tenon joinery, all performed with nothing but hand tools, a sure sign of extraordinary craftsmanship!
