Location: Dallas
A 19th century rustic oak side table, hand carved with a frieze of acanthus leaves running across the apron beneath a thick plank top. Carved corner blocks anchor sturdy turned baluster legs, while scrolled carved brackets frame the openings above and below. A lower shelf rests on square block feet, giving the table a strong, grounded stance.
The oak has mellowed to a warm brown patina, deepening in the recesses of the carving where the leaves curl and overlap. The frame is built with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the traditional method of the country joiner, with the lower shelf set firmly between the block feet for lasting strength.
The acanthus leaf, borrowed from classical architecture, became a favorite motif of the Renaissance Revival that flourished across Europe in the second half of the 19th century. Rural workshops embraced the style with vigor, translating its carved ornament into robust oak furniture made for farmhouse and manor alike.
Ideal beside a sofa or reading chair, as a lamp table in a library, or at the end of a hallway with books or pottery displayed on the shelf below. The carved oak brings depth and old world texture to a modern farmhouse, a lodge style room, or a contemporary interior in want of character.
Circa late 1800s
