19th Century French Henri II Walnut Armoire represents the impeccable melding of neoclassical architecture inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans, with hand-carved embellishment inspired by the Renaissance around 1500AD.  The boldly molded crown follows the contours of the step-front casework below, accentuating the center door with its full length mirror. The crown is richly carved with a repeating egg motif, with acanthus flourishes on the corners.  Flanking the center mirror are two full length tapered and fluted columns topped with Doric capitals set on finely contoured and carved bases with fletching and acanthus plumes dominating the decoration.  Flanking the columns are the side cabinets, amazingly carved with an upper and lower panel, with the tops matching yet different from the bottom carved detailing, but all incredibly amazing examples of the wood sculptor's art!  The side doors are mounted with external hinges to allow unfettered access to the interiors.  The center door also opens wide to reveal capacious storage.  Trimming the entire perimeter of the base is a rectilinear interpretation of the egg in Greek coin motif framed by molded detail, and supported by carved, urn-shaped feet.  The center conceals an exterior drawer behind the molded detail, trimmed with mold base molding and support3ed by six large bun feet.  The combination of the sumptuous sculpted French walnut, the hand-cast bronze and full length mirror is truly timeless!
