SaleSteeped in the romance and grandeur of the late 19th century, this impressive French Renaissance Revival bookcase was originally created for a Normandy château, where its monumental scale and richly sculpted presence would have been perfectly at home. Executed in the Henri II taste, it reflects that enduring fascination with the French Renaissance, when furniture was designed with an architectural sense of drama, permanence, and refinement.
Hand-crafted from beautifully patinated old-growth oak, the bookcase is crowned with a bold heraldic crest and layered moldings, while fluted and carved columns frame the glazed upper doors with remarkable presence. The rounded sides and relatively shallow depth soften its imposing scale, allowing it to make a statement without overwhelming the room. Below, the lower tier is richly adorned with lion’s heads, pendant pulls, carved pilasters, and deeply worked cabinet doors, all contributing to the sense of artistry and distinction that defines the piece. With handsome display space above and generous storage below, it is as functional as it is striking.
Furniture of this caliber was made to lend dignity and beauty to an interior, and this example still carries that same romantic spirit today, with all the richness, craftsmanship, and decorative confidence of its era.
Also available at the time of this writing is the matching buffet from the same extraordinary château suite. Created as a companion piece for a Normandy interior, it carries the same richly sculpted Renaissance Revival artistry and rounded silhouette, offering a rare chance to bring together two pieces originally conceived as one grand statement.
