The graceful curves and naturalistic ornament of the Louis XV period find beautiful expression in this 19th century French antique fauteuil. Carved from fruitwood, the frame follows the flowing rhythm associated with the French Rococo tradition, from its gently shaped crest and open armrests to the serpentine apron and cabriole legs.
Stylized shells, scrolling foliage, and acanthus details enliven the framework without overwhelming its refined silhouette. A prominent scallop shell centers the front apron, while carved flourishes rise from the feet and continue along the arm supports. The generous seat and tall upholstered back retain floral needlepoint worked in a lush palette of roses, leaves, and scrolling foliage against a dark ground. Its remarkable preservation reflects the care this armchair has received for more than a century.
