19th Century French Walnut Louis XVI Armchair ~ Bergere represents a timeless example of the classical revival so endearing to the French as well as the rest of the world!  Utilizing fine French walnut, the artisans created a rectilinear design festooned with finely carved detail inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture, from the arched seatback crown to the tapered and fluted legs below.  Bergeres are distinguished by enclosed spaces under the armrests, providing a cozy wraparound effect that was originally designed to block drafts.  The silk damask upholstery remains in serviceable condition but does show age and wear stains as pictured.  Reupholstering this exquisite frame will be ultimately desirable.
