SalePair 19th Century French Regence Walnut Armchairs ~ Fauteuils is an incredibly elegant set, with the sumptuous wood, considered the finest indigenous furniture wood in Europe, skillfully and artfully sculpted with shell, floral and foliate motifs on the arched seatback crown, shoulders, and even the frame below the seatback. Elegantly contoured armrests, with padded upholstered arms, are carved with complementary motifs, leading the eye down to the generous seat which is supported subtly scrolled legs carved with shell, foliate and escargot designs, and crest motifs appearing between the legs on the apron.
The Regence style is an historical transition between the Baroque influences of the Louis XIV period and the Louis XV period, the latter of whom was the Sun King's grandson, so quite a bit of time passed between the two style iterations. It is characterized by less overall mass, more emphasis on delicacy and light-hearted naturalistic adornment, yet not yet approaching the excesses of the Rococo movement that was soon to come.
Circa 1890s
Each measures 39.5H x 26W x 20.5D; seat 16.5H
