Hand crafted from solid oak during the 18th century, this handsome Dutch trunk reflects the enduring influence of Gothic design that remained popular in the Low Countries long after the medieval period. The entire façade is enriched with deeply carved decoration, including stylized scrolling vines, rosettes, and foliate panels arranged in a balanced architectural composition. Three recessed carved panels dominate the front, framed by richly ornamented stiles and rails that demonstrate the skill of the village craftsman.
The substantial plank top opens to reveal generous interior storage, making the piece as practical today as it was over two centuries ago for storing linens, clothing, or household valuables. Its bold block feet, warm aged oak patina, and original forged iron lock plate further enhance its authentic character. Equally suited for use as a blanket chest, coffee table, or hall chest, it brings remarkable period craftsmanship and historic presence to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Circa late 1700s
