Crafted from solid oak and fruitwood during the 19th century, this rare Gothic Revival deacon’s bench beautifully reflects the architectural language of a historic church interior. Long pews were created in quantity for the congregation, while only a few smaller benches were made for deacons and other members of the clergy, making this intimate ecclesiastical form especially difficult to find.
Pointed arches, carved tracery, slender turned supports, pierced foliate panels, and tightly scrolled terminals give the bench the character of Gothic architecture interpreted in furniture. Its arched supports create an elegant rhythm throughout the design, while the stripped finish reveals the expressive grain, age, and natural patina of the solid pine.
