Elegant in form and beautifully executed, this French Louis XVI style bench is crafted in mahogany with a broad rectangular seat raised upon four finely fluted legs. The apron is carved on all four sides with an interlaced motif framed by delicate reeding, giving the piece visual interest from every angle and allowing it to be placed freely within a room.
Its generous proportions are one of its greatest virtues. The bench has enough presence to anchor the foot of a bed, while its width and depth also make it an excellent choice between two armchairs or in front of a sofa. With a tray placed on top, it can serve as an upholstered coffee table, offering a softer and more distinctive alternative to a conventional table. It would also work beautifully beneath a window, in a dressing room, or as additional seating in a spacious entry.
The Louis XVI style is rooted in the neoclassical movement that emerged in France during the late 18th century, when furniture design turned toward the clarity, balance, and ornament of classical antiquity.
