Handmade needlepoint gives this antique bench the rich surface of a small tapestry, with an allover floral design worked in the millefleurs tradition against a deep blue ground. Inspired by the celebrated medieval and Renaissance tapestries associated with the Cluny Museum in Paris, the composition is filled with scattered blossoms and foliage, creating the same sense of abundance and ornament that made those historic weavings so enduring.
Made to complement a matching bench dated 1935, both by J.R.Hoogezand of Utrecht, this bench is a fine Renaissance Revival interpretation of that tradition. Needlepoint of this scale required many hours of careful handwork, and that devotion is still evident in the dense pattern and beautifully aged color. The upholstered top is secured with decorative nailheads above a carved wooden frame with turned legs and a stretcher base.
This is the slightly larger of the two coordinating benches and features animals within the tapestry field while the other is upholstered in a floral millefleurs design. Together they make a particularly appealing pair, yet each stands beautifully on its own. Sold separately. See Related Products below left.
