Created in Paris by the distinguished Maison Lalande, this exceptional late 19th century bookcase reflects the refined neoclassical tradition for which the celebrated cabinetmaking house became known. Its grand yet beautifully tailored architecture is enriched by exquisite figured mahogany, decorative burl veneers, generous glazed doors and finely cast gilt bronze mounts.
Four glazed doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with adjustable wooden shelves, allowing the collection within to become part of the bookcase’s visual beauty. The two broad central doors are balanced by narrower arched doors on either side, creating an elegant symmetry softened by the graceful curves of the upper glazing. Richly figured lower panels anchor the composition, while slender pilasters establish a dignified architectural rhythm across the façade.
The warmth and movement of the veneers are framed by delicate gilt bronze molding. Classical rosettes, foliate capitals, key guards, decorative plaques and finely detailed sabots accent the cabinetry with understated brilliance. The mounts appear like carefully placed jewels, enhancing the beauty of the wood while preserving the restrained elegance associated with the Louis XVI tradition.
A stepped and molded cornice completes the silhouette, lending the bookcase a commanding presence without overwhelming its refined proportions. The remarkable depth of the mahogany, intricate patterns of the burl and warm glow of the bronze have matured together, creating the rich patina and quiet distinction that can only be achieved through age and superior craftsmanship.
The bookcase retains an interior maker’s label reading “Maison Lalande,” identifying it with the noted Parisian furniture house. Maison Lalande was founded in 1852 at 57 rue de Charenton in Paris. The business was subsequently continued by the founder’s son as Lalande Fils, receiving a bronze medal at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1894, the company became Maison Lalande, Devouge & Colosiez and continued producing sophisticated furniture inspired by the great French styles. Documented pieces by the firm include finely made mahogany, marquetry and ormolu-mounted furniture, including glazed bibliothèques of comparable neoclassical character.
A magnificent example of Parisian cabinetmaking, this Maison Lalande bookcase combines generous display and storage with the enduring romance of fine French furniture. Its noble scale, beautifully selected veneers and exquisite bronze ornamentation make it an important statement piece worthy of an exceptional collection.
