Antique French Louis XVI Walnut Bookcase ~ Bibliotheque by Hirler of Alsace is a remarkable example of the revival of classic styles that has occurred dozens of times since the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans. This example was rendered by talented artisans employed by Hirler out of Mulhouse, a charming rural community in the Alsace region near the borders of Germany and Switzerland. The tailored architecture is enhanced by relief carvings of Greek wave and urns with swags, and includes foliate accents. No less than 20 beveled panes are affixed to the two center doors allowing one to view the interior arranged on adjustable original shelving. Two cabinets on each side allow more discreet storage. Fine molded detail enhances the rich natural beauty of the indigenous wood, enhanced by cast brass key guards and hinges. Support is provided by six tapered and fluted legs. Note the maker's label.
Circa early 1900s.
