SaleA striking pair of 19th century Flemish bookcases, masterfully crafted in richly patinated oak and designed with the depth, symmetry, and architectural presence that make such pieces so compelling. Each bookcase is crowned with bold moldings above an upper glazed cabinet door, the etched glass centered with a classical urn overflowing with flowers and framed by delicate ornamental detailing. The glass brings a welcome note of refinement, set against the strength and intricacy of the carved oak surround.
The carving throughout is particularly handsome, with turned and carved supports, layered moldings, lion’s heads, and deeply worked door panels that give the façade remarkable texture and relief. The lower cabinets are equally expressive, their geometric and foliate carvings balanced by a fan motif that draws the eye and lends rhythm to the composition. The flared center section adds another sculptural note, while the drawer, centered with a lion’s head pull, reinforces the workmanship and character of each piece.
Though richly carved, the proportions remain tall and relatively narrow, giving the pair an elegant verticality. Together they create a beautifully balanced statement, whether used to flank a mantel, frame a doorway, or stand as mirror images in a room that calls for symmetry and presence. Adjustable shelves in the upper sections and additional storage below make them as practical as they are distinctive.
